This clip comes from the 2011 documentary Miss Representation, written and directed by Jennifer Siebel Newsom.
The film provides an analysis of the role of the media in the misrepresentation and under-representation of women in the US, arguing for a connection between the representations of women in pop culture and their lack of political efficacy. This particular clip focuses on Who Represents You? providing important statistics and interviews about women’s representation in government.
I agree with Gavin Newsom’s statement that people would be shocked if they knew the countries that have had woman leaders before the United States because the media’s coverage may lead people to believe there are more women represented in U.S. politics–and fewer women in leadership roles in countries outside the U.S–than there actually are. I was also struck by Condoleezza Rice’s statements on her experiences.
