As John McCain’s running mate, Palin joined McCain in describing herself as a “maverick.” Her speech appeals to the value of patriotism, presents McCain as an American hero, thereby adding to her own ethos, and argues that McCain will be a better president than Obama due to his experience. Reception of this speech was very positive. That rhetorical skill and positive reception of Palin would not last.
